Coonoor Feb. 11 Prices rose on an average Rs 2 a kg at the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) held on Friday with the low volume fetching matching demand from upcountry buyers. A volume of 8.11 lakh kg was offered for sale. This was the second lowest quantum so far for 2007. The volume was low because of frost biting into over 1,000 hectares of tea fields in the Nilgiris.

The auctions continued to be held manually as e-auctions failed.

Buyers found several popular marks to be of good quality matching with the winter characteristics of high-grown Nilgiri teas. As a result, a number of such teas fetched over Rs 75 a kg.

Darmona Estate got the highest price of Rs 99 a kg among the CTC teas from bought-leaf factories. Homedale Estate got Rs 96, Highfield Estate Rs 89, Vigneshwar Estate Rs 84, Selvaganapathy Supreme, Green View Estate and Shanthi Estate Rs 80.

Likewise, several orthodox teas from corporate sector fetched over Rs 100 a kg. Of them, Curzon got the highest price of Rs 152, followed by Kodanaad Rs 148, Singara Rs 142, Erinkadu Rs 131, Kairbetta Rs 126, Mailoor Rs 125, Corsley Rs 124, Havukal, Chamraj and Sutton Rs 122, Quin Shola and Prammas Rs 115, Glendale Rs 114 and Tiger Hill Rs 104.
