Kottayam Feb. 12 Signs of revival are visible in the arecanut market. The inflow of one-year-old dehusked and dried arecanut, popular as `Kottadacka choll', is very low and the price remains at Rs 75-78 without much variation during the past few weeks. The inflow of new arecanut, which is brought to the market straight after dehusking and drying, have picked up considerably, according to the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) sources.

Now sold at Rs 70-72 a kilogram, the demand of the new variety is gradually improving as buying has strengthened in North India. Tender arecanut is also sold for Rs 4,100 a quintal.

Arecanut growers are now hopeful, following a report that appeared in a section of the press that Mr Shankar Bhat of Dakshina Karnataka has prepared wine from tender arecanuts.

His experiments for the last 20 years have become successful following the finding that tender arecanut is a rich source for quality wine. Mr Bhat intends to float a company for large-scale production of the wine.
