Hyderabad Feb. 12 India has come a long way in improving life expectancy and infant mortality rates, yet a high proportion of the population suffers from preventable diseases, said Ms Panabaaka Lakshmi, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.

She was addressing governmental and non-governmental organisations at a two-day national conference on population, health and social development with special focus on southern States here on Monday.

EVALUATION

The idea behind the ongoing conference is to evaluate the performance of southern States, understand their success stories and draw lessons from thesm, which could then be used for improving the performance of individual States, said Mr Harishankar Singhania, Vice-Chairman, Population Foundation of India (PFI).

Dr Leela Visaria, Member, Advisory Council, PFI, discussed in detail the demographic transition in Southern India, adding that comprehensive package of care and well-executed health programmes would go a long way in the pursuit of human development path.
