New Delhi Feb. 13 NYK Shipping Management Pte Ltd (NYKSM), the NYK Group's subsidiary that provides ship management services by training manpower, today said it would double the number of seafarers that it sources from India over the next four years.

"We are looking at enhancing our sourcing from India. We plan to double the number of Indian seafarers to 900 by 2010 from about 450 at present," Capt Takamaru Ishida, Chairman and CEO, NYKSM, said. These 450 Indian seafarers occupy 241 ship positions on NYK Liners' fleet of about 660 vessels.

Today, almost 25 per cent of NYKSM's workforce at technical and managerial levels comprise Indians, which is more than any other country except the Philippines," said Capt Tatsuo Kodama, Chief Representative India, NYKSM. There are about 1,800 seafarers from the Philippines at NYK, out of which 900 occupy ship positions.

NYKSM plans to have 550 Indian seafarers in 2008, less than 700 in 2009 and about 900 in 2010.

Asked about the trend in wages of seafarers, Capt Kodama said there has been a 40 per cent increase in salary levels of seafarers during the last five years in dollar terms. NYK Group's major customers include Maruti and Tata Steel and the company is expecting increase in demand from these firms.

NYKSM, which already has offices in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, has now opened an office in Delhi.
