Mumbai, Feb. 13 The Maharashtra Government is planning to buy 600 MW of additional power to tide over the current acute power shortage in the State.

The State Cabinet on Tuesday gave the go ahead to the Maharashtra State Electrify Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) to buy the power.

Mr A.B. Pandey, Managing Director of MSEDCL, said additional power would be bought from independent power producers. About Rs 400 crore per month would be required to buy this additional power, he said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Mr Pandey said that MSEDCL could spend between Rs 6-8 per unit of power. MSEDCL is currently forced to resort to load-shedding in the State.

Tariff increase

The Maharashtra Government, in press release, said that a part of the financial assistance given to the MSEDCL would be recovered from consumers in the form of increased tariff, subject to approval from the Maharashtra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC). MSEDCL has filed a petition with MERC for approving an increase in the duration of load-shedding across the State.

It has proposed to increase the load shedding by one hour in urban and industrial zones and by two hours in those areas, which are predominantly agricultural in activity. The hearing will take place on February 15 in Pune.

Moreover, MSEDCL has introduced an additional day, when power will not be available at all for industrial consumers. The power cut for industrial consumers will be implemented in a staggered manner.

Currently the State is experiencing a shortage of about 5700 MW.
