Kolkata Feb. 13 The Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry today asked the public sector oil marketing companies to consider enhancing the tanker freight charges in Kolkata and its adjoining districts by Re 1 to Rs 123.67 a kilo litre.

The Ministry's stand has virtually put the tanker operators - who had struck work in January and crippled the city for almost a week demanding a minimum payment of Rs 130 per kl - in a spot. The operators' had withdrawn the strike temporarily on January 30. They were slated to go on an indefinite strike beginning February 15, if their demands were not met.

While sources in oil marketing companies are hopeful that the tanker operators will accept the Ministry's verdict, sources in the West Bengal Tankers' Association said that they were yet to take a call on their future course of action.

Earlier, the Union Petroleum Minister, Mr Murli Deora, joined a meeting with the office bearers of West Bengal Tankers' Association and the State Transport Minister, Mr Subhas Chakraborty.

The meeting was attended by senior executives of marketing companies.

According to sources, the outcome of today's meeting vindicated the stand of marketing companies who had previously offered to pay Rs 122.67 per kl - so far the highest rate in the country.
