Spices & Condiments Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports India tops in ground pepper supply to US G.K. Nair
Imports of black pepper from India have shown a significant increase of 82.9 per cent during January-November last year to 6,158 tonnes from 3,368 tonnes in the same period the previous year.
White pepper
However, white pepper imports from India continued to remain negligible. According to International Pepper Community (IPC), during January to November 2006, the US imported 63,652 tonnes of pepper, an increase of 5.7 per cent (60,220 tonnes). The country imported a total of 49,983 tonnes of whole black pepper up by 6.7 per cent (46,864 tonnes).
Exporting nations
Vietnam continues to be the largest exporter to the US market with 17,352 tonnes, followed by Brazil with 12,818 tonnes, Indonesia 11,926 tonnes and India with 6,158 tonnes. Exports from Brazil to the US have shown an increase of 9.8 per cent taking the second slot pushing Indonesia to the third position. Supply of pepper from India continues to increase significantly by 82.9 per cent compared to the volume imported in the same period in 2005, IPC sources said. During January-November 2006, the US imported 6,554 tonnes of ground pepper, down 3.3 per cent against 6,780 tonnes in 2005. India still maintains its position as the largest exporter of ground pepper to the US supplying 2,837 tonnes, they said. The other suppliers are Germany, Brazil, Indonesia and China.
