New Delhi Feb. 13 State-owned NTPC Ltd needs to diversify into power equipment manufacturing, besides areas such as nuclear power generation and renewable energy options. The Power Secretary, Mr Anil Razdan, said here on Tuesday that NTPC should actively look at the option of picking up stake in equipment manufacturing facilities.

"NTPC should look in that direction," Mr Razdan told a power conference here. Any stake taken by NTPC in a power equipment company will eventually help to increase domestic electric power manufacturing capacity, he said.

NTPC currently relies on state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd and other equipment suppliers for sourcing power plant equipment for its stations.

The Secretary also said NTPC should make an entry into nuclear power generation as well as renewable energy, especially wind power generation. NTPC should also consider power plants using hydrogen as fuel, he said.

"The basket must be wide," Mr Razdan said, adding: "NTPC should have multiple fuel options to withstand price and global competition."

Speaking at the conference, the Power Minister, Mr Sushilkumar Shinde, said that capacity addition has to go hand in hand with gearing up of `operation and maintenance' for meeting the requirements of the changing environment. Mr Shinde said initiatives such as launching the `Ultra Mega Projects' is aimed at deriving benefit from economies of scale and to provide power at low cost. This experience, he said, may be replicated in transmission and distribution sectors also.
