Economy States - Tamil Nadu Agriculture to get priority in XI Plan Our Bureau
Briefing reporters on Tuesday after holding discussions with people's representatives and other organisations in this region, the Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Commission, Prof M. Naganathan, said the Tamil Nadu Government has drawn up an elaborate plan for strengthening the State's infrastructure.
Financial Assistance
He admitted to certain imbalance in the development of education, social welfare, life expectancy, etc, in some districts and said that the State Government would initiate measures to set it right very soon. The consultative committee, he said, was trying to sensitise people's representatives and the public about the schemes and implication of the Five-Year Plan, eliciting details from them for the overall development of the State. "The Final Eleventh Plan document for Tamil Nadu would be ready by May-end," he said. The State envisages the Plan expenditure at Rs 80,000 crore. Prof. Naganathan said that this could vary after factoring the State's revenue/income. He, however, indicated that the State would seek higher financial assistance from the Centre. He further said that industry and service sectors recorded significant growth while the agricultural sector was lagging behind. "The farmers are not too happy because of the steep rise and fall in the price of the farm produce. The State would focus on schemes for developing this sector and strive to resolve the farmers woes," he said.
