Visakhapatnam Feb. 14 There is a need to promote energy-efficient, responsible and eco-friendly fishing in the country, and the Central Institute for Fisheries Technology (CIFT) will help the traditional fishermen as well as the industry in the endeavour, according to Dr K. Devadasan, Director.

He was speaking at a seminar here on Wednesday on energy saving in the fishing sector organised by CIFT on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee. Prof. L. Venugopala Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University, inaugurated the seminar

Dr Devadasan said technologies are available to modify the fishing gear and also the engines of the fishing vessels to reduce energy consumption and make fishing more economical and eco-friendly. "Fishing, as it is being carried out today, is very energy-intensive and therefore uneconomical. It should be changed and over exploitation of fisheries resources should be avoided," he said.

Dr M.R. Boopendranath, principal scientist, CIFT (Kochi), presented a paper on energy-saving in the fishing sector. He said 20-30 per cent saving in fuel could be achieved by modifying the fishing gear and the design of the engines of the vessels. He said use of acoustic fish detection devices, global positioning system, remote sensing technologies, proper fleet management, fuel flow monitors and optimisation of fleet size would result in energy efficiency.
