Shipping NMPT handles more passenger vessels Our Bureau
Till February 12, the port handled 13 passenger vessels. This number is more than the total number of passenger vessels handled in the last two fiscals. The port handled eight passenger vessels during 2004-05 and four passenger vessels during 2005-06. The 13th passenger vessel m.v. Ocean Odyssey - of the current fiscal called at the port on February 12. The vessel, which came from Goa, sailed to Lakshadweep the same day with 75 passengers and 85 crew members.
Cruise terminal
To meet the needs of passenger traffic, the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) is constructing a cruise terminal. The terminal is likely to be completed by June. A press release by Mr S. Gopalakrishna, NMPT Traffic Manager, said here on Wednesday that NMPT has initiated many safety measures for the welfare of dock workers. In this context, Mr P. Tamilvanan, NMPT Chairman, released a safety manual on February 12. This manual will help develop safety consciousness among workforce to meet `zero accident policy'. The release said NMPT conducts regular safety training programmes to workers to create awareness on the safety aspects for handling cargo in a safe manner.
