Bangalore Feb. 14 Alcatel-Lucent has entered into a contract with telecom firm ITI for the supply and installation of 2 million GSM lines to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). The multi-million euro contract will cover the expansion of BSNL's mobile network in western India. The company did not give the details of the contract and the deadline for the roll out of the lines. Alcatel-Lucent will make an announcement on the contract soon, said the spokesperson.

"The expansion of the GSM network, particularly in rural areas, will improve the lives of millions in India," said Mr Pritam Singh, MD, ITI. "ITI has been the leading face of GSM/EDGE base station manufacturing in India and with Alcatel-Lucent is building the most sophisticated GSM/EDGE mobile network in India, the fastest growing mobile market in the world."

"Alcatel-Lucent is committed to bringing to India advanced communications technology and expertise that will contribute to its economic growth," said Mr Olivier Picard, President of Alcatel-Lucent's Europe and South activities, in a release issued by the company on Wednesday. "The long-term collaboration between Alcatel-Lucent and ITI will enable BSNL to rollout mobile networks rapidly and enable them to provide the high-quality communications services their customers are looking for."
