Coonoor Feb. 14 The volume of tea coming up for the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association continues to be low.

For the seventh auctions of 2007 to be held here on Thursday and Friday, a volume of 8.21 lakh kg has been catalogued. This is the third lowest volume for the year so far and is just 10,000 kg more than the second lowest volume of last week.

The volume matches the offer in the corresponding sale of last year when 8.24 lakh kg had been offered.

Of the 8.21 lakh kg on offer now, as much as 7.57 lakh kg belong to the CTC variety and 0.64 lakh kg, orthodox variety. Again, as much as 6.06 lakh kg belong to the leaf grades and only 2.15 lakh kg, dust grades.

The proportion of orthodox variety continues to be low in both the leaf and dust grades. Only 0.38 lakh kg of the leaf grades contain orthodox variety, while 5.68 lakh kg have CTC variety. In the dust category, orthodox teas account for 0.26 lakh kg, while the CTC teas total 1.89 lakh kg.

Higher prices seen

Auctioneers said that the low volume could help the prices look up as in the recent weeks. Also, there is a marked improvement in the quality of many invoices because of the winter high grown teas. Last week, such teas fetched Rs 2-3 a kg more.
