New Delhi Feb. 14 The Minister for Mines, Mr Sis Ram Ola, on Wednesday said that there is a strong need to reorient the priorities and strategies for the mining sector.

"With the rise in demand, globalisation and economic liberalisation, changes in demand patterns for non-renewal resources and National Mineral Policy, a number of Indian as well as foreign companies have shown keen interest in investing in mineral exploration, mining and value addition," Mr Ola said at the National Mineral Award function for 2005.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of State for Mines, Dr T. Subbarami Reddy, called upon the scientists of mineral sciences to make an effort to bridge the gap between India and the developed countries by discovering the huge potential of minerals that are available in the country.

He also said that in the development of the Indian economy, the mining sector plays a very important role and contributes 2.6 per cent to the country's GDP.

Mr Reddy pointed out that around 90 per cent of diamonds that are used all over the world are processed in India. The country has identified about 450 million carat diamonds, he said, and urged the scientists to make efforts to avoid imports and earn wealth for the country.

A total of 23 geoscientists, engineers and technologists were awarded the National Mineral Award for 2005.
