Hyderabad Feb. 15 The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) has agreed to conduct a study to see whether the death of over 1,500 sheep in Andhra Pradesh was due to the consumption of Bt cotton plant material.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr P.V. Satheesh, Director of Deccan Development Society, said the society had requested NIN to carry out toxic studies to look into the issue.

Several farmers and non-governmental organisations had been alleging that thousands of sheep died last year after they consumed leaves of Bt cotton plants.

Several scientists from Asian countries, who were also present, felt that genetically engineered seeds were no answer for pest control.

Citing examples in their respective countries, the scientists said GE in fact increased use of pesticides. They said alternatives like organic farming needed to be encouraged.
