Outlook AMD bullish on India V.Rishi Kumar
The Managing Director of AMD India, Mr Alok Ohrie, said "India has begun to mirror its global experience in terms of making entry into different business and personal computing segments with a wider range of micro- processors. This is despite the fact that the company has been barely 5 years in India." Speaking to Business Line recently during his visit to Hyderabad, Mr Ohrie, who took over reins late last year, said "the acquisition of ATI has empowered the company with the capability to offer not just central processors but feature-packed graphics. We are able to address a larger market, which includes mobile devices." Together with ATI, the intellectual property (IP) now covers microprocessors, graphics, chipsets and consumer electronics, providing the necessary edge across the chain, he said. The company believes that its solutions would enable users to harness the power of central processing and graphics power capability on the same chip, following the acquisition of ATI, a graphics processors major. ATI has operations in Hyderabad.
Strengthening R&D
In addition to sales and marketing teams, Mr Ohrie said "AMD is strengthening the platform engineering and R&D teams based in India, with a focus on customer-centric innovation. The company's 64-bit computing platform that offers 32-bit compatibility is available in a range of processors including Opteron, Athlon and Turion for mobile computers." Mr Ohrie said the company was pleased with the Centre's new initiatives to support the semiconductor industry. This would help attract more companies as the domestic consumption is poised for significant growth. AMD India has begun to work on the concept of direct engagement with large customers with business development teams. This in effect gets developers up to date with what they need to innovate, both through channels as also directly. In India, AMD partners original equipment manufactures such as HCL, Wipro and Zenith and carries similar engagement globally with HP, Lenovo and Dell.
SEMINDIA PARTNERSHIP
"We have committed to be a strategic partner with SemIndia's Assembly Test Mark and Pack (ATMP) facility coming up in Hyderabad. The ATMP is a level below fabrication and design and forms crucial part of the semiconductor system chain," he explained.
