Bangalore Feb. 16 The State's jewellery industry has not shown much interest in the Karnataka Government's plan to set up a gem and jewellery park in Bangalore, said the Minister for Major Industries, Mr Katta Subramanya Naidu.

Speaking at the inauguration of the first edition of the three-day South India Jewellery Show 2007 organised by The Art of Jewellery magazine, in association with the World Gold Council and the Gitanjali Group, Mr Naidu called for entrepreneurs to come forward to set up the jewellery park.

More efforts

He also said that the State Government has initiated several efforts to tackle the shortage of human resources such as skill development and on-the-job training programmes with a thrust on export and manufacturing. The jewellery industry is a key sector for these initiatives, said Mr Naidu. He urged the gem and jewellery sector to employ more people from the State.

B2B expo

The South India Jewellery Show aims to be a platform of interaction for manufacturers, gemstone dealers, wholesalers and designers to showcase their merchandise to retailers. The B2B expo will showcase merchandise from over 120 participants.

Mr K. Shivram, Vice-President of the World Gold Council, said the exhibition would help "shrink distances and time" between manufacturers and retailers, and ultimately benefit the consumers.

According to Mr Suresh Wadhera, Convenor of the show, the exhibition is an opportunity for exchange of knowledge and ideas about latest trends and technology in the jewellery sector.

Bollywood actress Celina Jaitley and brand ambassador of the Gitanjali Group was the celebrity guest of honour at the inaugural event.
