Debt Recovery Tribunal in Madurai

The Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) was inaugurated here on Friday following the establishment of a Bench of the Madras High Court a few years ago. It is the fourth in the State and 33rd at the All-India level, under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. Already, two are functioning at Chennai and one at Coimbatore. The Chairperson, Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunal, Chennai, Mr Justice K. Gnanaprakasam, inaugurating the new tribunal, said when the Ministry of Finance decided to go in for an additional tribunal at Chennai and one `elsewhere', Madurai found favour on the ground of distance and the existence of a Bench of the High Court. Fourteen out of 30 districts in the State would come under the new tribunal. According to Mr N. Mahalingam, Presiding Officer (In-charge), DRT, Madurai, the districts that come under the new tribunal are — Madurai, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Salem Namakkal, Tiruchi, Karur, Erode and Dindigul.
