Chennai Feb. 16 There is need to improve gold jewellery distribution channels in India so that jewellers can bring latest designs and innovative products to the customer, according to Mr K. Shivram, Vice-President, World Gold Council.

Speaking at a press meet announcing the third Gem and Jewellery India International Exhibition (GJIE 2007), he said designers had a big role to play in the future.

B2B event

GJIE 2007 will be held here from March 2.

The four-day B2B event will bring together jewellers across India to share the latest design and crafting technologies involving gold, platinum, diamond and other jewellery, said Mr L.K.S. Syed Ahmed, President, The Madras Jewellers & Diamond Merchants' Association, organisers of the event.

India consumes about 800 tonnes of gold a year and is the largest manufacturer of gold jewellery producing 550 tonnes a year.

With an annual turnover of about Rs 70,000 crore, the jewellery industry is dominated by small jewellers who find it difficult to interact with their counterparts across India, said Mr Ahmed.

This event is expected to bring together about 12,000 business visitors and open up trade across the country, he said.

The event will have a separate pavilion showcasing branded jewellery, light-weight jewellery from Kerala, gold chain and jewellery manufactured in Mumbai besides speciality jewellery from Gujarat (Kundan and Meenakari work), Jaipur (pearls and gems), Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Agra and Chennai.

Trade promotion

Seminars will be held as part of the event to share new crafting practices, designs and facilitate trade between jewellers from across India, said Mr Ahmed.

The event is supported by the World Gold Council, Diamond Trading Company and Platinum Guild International.
