Mohan Padmanabhan

A brief history of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild

The Publishers and Booksellers Guild, founded in 1975 by some enthusiasts at the instance of Frankfurt Book Messe, which is at present the largest Book Fair in the world, launched the first edition in 1976 at the ground adjacent to Victoria Memorial.

The Founder President was Sushil Mukherjee and founder secretary of the society Jayant Manaktalla. In the early years, among others, the key persons were Prabir Dasgupta (since deceased) and Bimal Dhur without whose persistent efforts and commitment, the Guild could not have survived.

The Kolkata Book Fair created new awareness and the importance of book as an essential part of Bengali life and culture thus came into sharp focus. At the initial stage the committed members of the Guild had to face resistance from traditionalists who sneered at this attempt; but after the wonderful success of the fair such attitudes vanished. The Guild started sending its team to Frankfurt Book Messe and began to introduce Focal themes based on the national ambience.
