Letters Bank for farmers
This is with reference to "Give farmers a separate bank" (Business Line, February 16). Dr M. S. Swaminathan's views are most pertinent. The Finance Minister would do well to include many of the proposals in the coming Budget. The National Sample Survey's findings that 40 per cent of the farmers will give up farming soon is only too true, and it is already happening in some villages. Today, farmers have neither proper irrigation nor adequate financial support. Agri-business has never been a top priority item in the past Budgets. We hope Budget 2007-08 will make a departure and focus mainly on support for assured irrigation facilities to farmers, who must also be given hassle-free credit cards from all nationalised banks, based on the market value of their farm lands. It is a sad reality that, today, there is not a single bank dedicated to farmers. Nabard, too, must be restructured to address the genuine financial needs of the cultivators and to make credit cheaper and more accessible. Farming is not viable now as even when farmers enter a bank, they are looked upon as trouble-creators and non-repayers of loans. S. A. Alagarsamy Chennai
