For a road to Paradip

THE HIGHWAY from Daitari mines to Paradip, work on which has come to a halt.

The road connectivity to the Paradip port has gone for a six. The work on the widening and strengthening of the 90-km Cuttack-Paradip road, known as State Highway 12, which was to have been taken up more than year ago, is yet to start. It is a Orissa Government project with contributions from Paradip Port Trust and Central Road Fund (CRF).

PPT has committed Rs 15 crore, of which Rs 5 crore has already been paid while Rs 25 crore has come from CRF. More than a year has passed, but the State government is yet to finalise the contract even as the condition of the road worsens. The condition of the 77-km Chandikhol-Paradip road — National Highway 5A — is not any better. For a different reason though. With work on four-laning of the NH5A in progress, there is an acute congestion on it.

At any point of time, several hundred trucks are stranded on it. Meanwhile, according to reports, work on the Daitari-Paradip road too has been suspended due to an agitation by local tribals facing eviction from land as a sequel to industrialisation of the area.
