Shipping Vizag gets ready for Panamaxes
The Visakhapatnam port successfully navigated a Panamax vessel into the inner harbour on Saturday for the first time in its history, drawing in a vessel with 225-mtrs LOA (length overall), 32.26 mtrs beam and 72,000 DWT (dead weight tonnage), according to a VPT press release. The entrance channel to the inner harbour is one of the narrowest in the country, with many bends and curves, thus restricting the entry of Panamax vessels into the port. To overcome the constraint and make it easier for the trade and shippers, the port has spent Rs. 25 crore on deepening and widening the channel and turning circle. The project, which started in August 2005, is nearing completion and, by March 2007, Panamax vessels with 11 mtrs draft can be brought into the inner harbour. On Saturday, MV Golden Gun could be berthed at EQ7 berth in the inner harbour with 8.6 mtrs draft. From April 1, the port will be able to handle the Panamax vessels in the inner harbour at four berths, reducing the congestion at the general cargo berth in the outer harbour.
