TDSAT adjourns Nimbus hearing
Our Bureau
New Delhi, Feb. 19
The Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has adjourned the matter of sports broadcaster Nimbus challenging the directions of TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) asking the company to reduce the tariff of its two channels, Neo Sports and Neo Sports Plus. Nimbus is reported to have sought an adjournment on the ground that its appeal for interim stay against TRAI's direction was pending before the Supreme Court.
In January, TRAI had asked Nimbus to reduce the price of its channels from Rs 49.50 (with a bouquet price of Rs 58.50) to Rs 21.25 in non-CAS areas, and to a maximum of Rs 5 in notified CAS areas. However, Nimbus had approached the Tribunal with the reasoning that it would be difficult for it to operate with TRAI's suggested tariffs, considering the $612 million it paid last year to acquire the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) cricket telecast rights till 2010. On January 16, TDSAT had declined to stay TRAI's order. Nimbus had challenged the order in the Delhi High Court, which also rejected its plea. The case is now pending before the Supreme Court.
