The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Monday launched the Backward Regions Grant Fund (BRGF) here in the Barpeta district of Assam.
Launching the scheme, Dr Singh said that the fund is a move aimed at bridging regional disparities in development and help backward regions to catch up with the rest of the country.
Districts covered
"A total of 250 districts are being taken up in the country under the BRGF and Rs 3,750 crore has been provided to the fund for the year with each district receiving an additional Rs 15 crore annually exclusively for developing infrastructure," the Prime Minister said.
The two unique features of the scheme are that it would be implemented totally through the panchayati raj institutions and the basis for programmes is the district panchayat and this will be a well-conceived plan prepared in a participatory manner, he said.
The district planning committees would integrate the plans of rural and urban local bodies utilising funds for promoting development in the backward areas by providing infrastructure, promoting sustainable livelihood and converging development inflows, the Prime Minister said.
