Ahmedabad Feb. 19 A major fire broke out at the Bharuch plant of pharma major Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd this afternoon, causing a possible loss running into crores of rupees.

There were no casualties, however, as the incident occurred at a time when no one was at the spot due to the employees' shift changing, at about 3.15 p.m, according to reports from the Ankleshwar-based manufacturing unit located in the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) premises in the Bharuch district of South Gujarat.

A Cadila Pharma spokesman said here this evening that the fire broke out at the ground floor of the company's ETA plant that manufactures Amlodipine.

Some employees tried to put out the fire using DCP and fire hydrant system while help was sought from the disaster prevention management system (DPMS) and other neighbouring companies of Ankleshwar, Panoli and Bharuch. The situation was brought under control by 17:20 hours.

According to a Government official, nearly 20 fire-tenders were pressed in to control the blaze that possibly began in toluene drums stored nearby in the raw material zone.
