Bangalore Feb. 19 Andhra Bank has taken the lead with a proposal to set up a large number of biometric ATMs. Initially the system would be installed in Andhra Pradesh, said Mr K. Ramakrishnan, Chairman and Managing Director.

Addressing presspersonsafter opening a new branch in the city on Monday, Mr Ramakrishnan said the bank is planning to set up to 120 to 150 biometric ATMs. These would also have the interactive voice recorded information delivery in local languages. Efforts are on to study the feasibility of adopting select languages of other regions.

The bank has also introduced a mobile ATM in Hyderabad and plans to set up such a facility in Bangalore. These would be programmed to have IVRC I in select languages.

Mr Ramakrishanan said there is a vast potential to expand the ATM network to areas with inadequate access to branch services.

Andhra Bank is also involved in a consortium of nationalised banks for developing a smart card for facilitating easier access to drawing money by pensioners and beneficiaries of Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in Andhra Pradesh. A pilot project has been initiated in Warangal district. It is expected to be replicated in other AP districts.
