Kochi Feb. 19 Adding an eighth city to its footprint across India, Cognizant recently began its operations from Kochi. Talking about its operations from the new city, Mr R. Chandrasekaran, Managing Director, said that the move underscored the company's commitment to diversifying its business operations and expanding its pool of talent.

The company now has operations in Chennai and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, Bangalore in Karnataka, Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh and Kochi in Kerala. Cognizant has taken up approximately 74,000 sq ft of leased space in Kochi. The new development centre will have the capacity to accommodate approximately 800 professionals. Phase I of the facility would be completed by April end and would create capacity for 400 professionals and Phase II by July 2007 for an additional capacity for 400 professionals, a press release said.

"Kerala has good and large engineering talent, which is the primary source for our recruiting", Mr Chandrasekaran said. It has about 82 engineering colleges and produces more than 23,000 qualified engineers each year. In addition, it has 186 science and arts colleges.
