Coimbatore Feb. 20 An all-party meeting held in the hosiery town of Tirupur on Tuesday has taken a decision to observe a dawn-to-dusk bandh on February 23 to protest against what it called attempts to alter the originally decided geographical boundary for the new railway division being created with Salem as headquarters.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of the sitting Coimbatore Lok Sabha Member and CPI leader, Mr Subbarayan.

Attended by various industrial trade bodies, besides all political parties, the meeting called upon the Union Railway Minister not to reconsider the plan. Various public bodies including political parties and citizens' forums in Coimbatore district have been for the past few days protesting against the attempts to change the boundary for the new railway division being carved out of the existing Palakkad division. The protest is against the attempts to retain the Coimbatore, Tirupur and Podanur sections within the Palakkad division.

In the meantime, the one-day `Coimbatore' city bandh called on Tuesday by the Salem Railway Division Protection Struggle Committee remained peaceful. Most of the shops and business establishments remained closed in the city and in peripheral areas. Educational institutions too remained closed and buses and autos did not ply in response to the bandh.

The Salem Railway Division Protection Struggle Committee comprising various social and trade bodies and trade unions is demanding that Coimbatore and all areas in Tamil Nadu up to Walayar on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border should be included in the Salem Railway division.

The Tirupur Exporters' Association in a statement said the creation of Salem railway division had been made in deference to the nearly 40 years of requests from the people of Tamil Nadu and the boundary for the new division had received approval from the Ministry of Railways.
