UK education fair in Pune from today

Pune Feb. 20 Close on the heels of the education fair held by the Perth Education city, Pune is to witness another education fest, this time being held by the UK universities.

About 45 universities are expected to participate in the fair. The fair will be on February 21 and is being held after a gap of five years. Talking to presspersons, Mr Simon Gammell OBE, Director, British Council, West India, said Pune is the last leg of the education fest which began from New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.

The education fest had received about 2,000 visitors in Delhi, 1,800 in Mumbai, close to 2,500 in the other three cities and is estimating about 1,600 from Pune.

Giving statistics, he said that more than 23,000 Indian students were currently studying in the UK. For September 2006 intake, 7,749 student visas had been issued for West India out of the total 19,221 visas which had been issued. This accounted for 40 per cent of the total visas issues while noting that it also recorded 21 per cent increase over 2005. It has also tied up with the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology for exchange of students for research.

Ms Suchita Gokarn, Head Education, UK, West India, said business management and IT took the lead in the number of student joining while noting that subjects such as paramedical courses, law, architecture and design were also gaining interest among the students.
