Chennai Feb. 20 Eureka Forbes, a Shapoorji Pallonji Group company, on Tuesday unveiled steam cleaner — SPAkle. The product, claimed to be complementary to the company's Euroclean vacuum cleaner, is developed in technical collaboration with the company's international partner Lux International AG of Switzerland.

Launching the cleaner in Chennai, Mr S. Muralidharan, General Manager, Eureka Forbes, said steam cleaning is internationally the most prevalent way of cleaning. It requires just a little over 2 litres of water for two-hour steam cleaning and does not require any stain removers, detergents or disinfectants to be added to it.

Priced at Rs 24,500, SPAkle is to be launched in all major cities in the first phase. The company expects to sell 50,000 units in the first year.

According to Mr Martin Jorgensen, a steam cleaner specialist from Lux International, SPAkle can "effectively replace all chemicals in your home, and will give you a cleaner-than-ever-before surface".

On whether SPAkle can replace vacuum cleaner, Mr Shashank Sinha, Marketing and Category Head of Cleaning, Eureka Forbes, said, the product is only complementary to a vacuum cleaner.

"After vacuuming, instead of mopping any surface with detergents and disinfectants, you can steam clean the surface for a better result," he said.

Initially, the company will target all the homes that use its vacuum cleaners. According to Mr Sinha, 28 lakh homes have Eureka Forbes vacuum cleaners in the country. "We sell around 2.6 lakh units of vacuum cleaners a year and growing at 7 to 8 per cent annually," he said. Eureka Forbes is the leader in the three-lakh-unit-per-year vacuum cleaner segment.

SPAkle is now imported from Italy as CBUs (completely built units). Towards the end of the calendar year the company plans to import SPAkle as CKD kits and assemble it in its facilities here.
