New Delhi Feb. 20 The Finance Ministry has dispensed with the verification of duty entitlement passbooks (DEPBs) by the customs at the electronic data interchange (EDI)-enabled ports of the country.

Currently, DEPBs issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) are subjected to a verification process by the customs at the port of registration.

Official sources confirmed that the verification procedure was being dispensed with in respect of EDI ports. This would cover about 35 EDI sites, which accounted for 93 per cent of the country's trade in 2005-06.

The verification procedure was stipulated to ensure that the goods covered by the Shipping Bills have actually been shipped and also to ensure that the same Bill was not used more than once for getting the DEPB.

It was also brought into force to ensure that the credit utilised was not more than the credit allowed in the DEPB.
