Hyderabad Feb. 21 With the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, announcing mega projects to develop four-lane highways across the country, the fast-track construction of bridges assumes significance, said Mr M.C. Bhide, Founder and Honorary Director-General, Indian Institution of Bridge Engineers (IIBE), Mumbai.

Addressing a press conference to announce a three-day seminar, beginning February 23, organised by the National Bridge & Research Development Centre, Hyderabad, a constituent of the IIBE, Mr Bhide said: "Our endeavour is to bring all the industry people together and to get across the message of hastening the process of building bridges so as to not only cut cost but also help the public in general."

Giving details of some of the fast track projects of the Railways, Mr R.K. Goyal, Principal Chief Engineer, South Central Railway, Secunderabad, said that one of the major projects concluded by the Railways recently was the Vijaywada-Gudur Bridge. "The normal time for the completion of this project would have been eight months. But by using modern mechanisation methods, deploying more manpower and a basic change in attitude to hasten and finish the project fast, helped us to complete the double-line bridge in five months. We could cut the cost too by 15 per cent," he said.

Mr Ajay Kumar Gupta, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), South Central Railway, Secunderabad, told Business Line that in the coming Budget they are looking at an outlay of Rs 800 crore for construction, of which a major portion would go for bridges.

Emphasising the need for fast track construction of bridges, Mr Bhide said the mission was to be the world-class centre in bridge R&D, strive to reduce construction time, develop economical, durable and aesthetic bridge structures. He said that over 200 members from all over India are expected to attend the conference.
