Hyderabad Feb. 21 Five million developers, four billion connected devices backed by one billion-plus Internet users, and the number growing, Sun Micro Systems believes that collaboration and sharing have become key drivers for innovation.

The Java economy is estimated at over a $100-billion globally and $12 billion in India (worth about 2.1 per cent of the GDP) and there is no let up on the open source software usage momentum and innovation, Sun Micro said.

The Executive Vice-President, Software, Sun Microsystems Inc, Mr Rich Green, an innovator associated with Java and Solaris, said the time for software development is much shorter compared with say couple of years ago as more connected devices proliferate with consumers demanding information and services on the go.

Mr Green said the open source Java platform outstrips Windows, Solaris, Linux, Macs, iPods, Xbox and PSP combined and the community of open source users and developers has been growing at a fast clip.

Sun Tech Days

Speaking at Sun Tech Days 2007, a worldwide developer conference at Hyderabad, concurrently held at Delhi, Pune and Chennai via satellite, Mr Green said 10,000 participants vindicates growing interest in software and services from the developer community.

India now accounts for about 40 community user groups and the numbers only vindicate that volumes drive value, Mr Green said and wanted the developers to connect during the conference where he said "sleep was optional."

The Chairman of Nasscom, Mr B. Ramalinga Raju, said that the barrierless flat world had opened up a big market for virtual delivery of services and developers in India and has the potential to latch on to this significant emerging opportunity.

The President, Sun Micro India, Mr Bhaskar Pramanik, said, "Sectors like life sciences and areas such as protein folding require faster processing capabilities and Sun was set to roll out Niagra 2, a multi-threaded processor with capability to handle 10,000 million transactions per second."
