China takes the lead

This refers to the news item "China Rly line near Tibet border" (Business Line, February 11). Having laid a railway line at an enormous outlay and involving great technical feats, up to Lhasa, China is extending it up to the Tibet border with Nepal.

India, meanwhile, is spending more time learning about the rapid progress China is making rather than expediting its own economic reforms and toning up the administrative machinery.

Specifically, there is slow progress on the J&K rail project and little headway in the rail line to Gangtok, leave aside the extension of lines in the difficult North-East terrain. There is an urgent need to implement projects that ensure the nation's security and commercial interests.
