Letters Fighting corruption
The Administrative Reforms Commission headed by Mr Veerappa Moily has submitted a useful report. It has, among other things, highlighted the great importance of ethics in governance. Corruption is a major issue of national concern today. Good governance, which implies getting results and returns equivalent to Re 1 for every rupee spent is possible only by eliminating corruption. Bribes, leakages and various forms of corruption reduce returns and affect results. We find corruption everywhere, including in banks. All types of benefits do not reach the ultimate beneficiaries in full. Good governance requires a corruption-free environment. The ARC recommendation that the Constitution be amended to provide for the setting up of a Rashtriya Lok Ayukta, and also make them mandatory in each State, is welcome. A uniform Lok Ayukta System with the required powers will surely go a long way in reducing corruption. If stringent punishments are ensured for all corrupt politicians, a conducive environment for good governance can be created. This is exactly what we need today. K.K. Ammannaya Udupi
