Mumbai Feb. 22 Mahindra & Mahindra has plans to offer multiple fuel options for its range of utility vehicles by 2010. By that year, we shall have our vehicles compatible with LPG, CNG and hybrids, said Dr Arun Jaura, Senior Vice-President R&D, Automotive sector, Mahindra & Mahindra.

"We are currently working on the fuel adaptability for our range of vehicles; we wish to be ready with our set of vehicles when the market has matured and the infrastructure for various fuels will be present across the country," said Dr Jaura.

"It is most likely that various fuel options such as CNG and LPG will co-exist in the country. As of now, auto manufacturers are concentrating on single fuels but we would like to focus on all, as fuel supplies vary with regions," said the official.

The company has been working with leading Indian engineering institutes like Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, for compatibility of fuel alternatives like bio-diesel for its range of utility vehicles. It recently unveiled the bio-diesel Scorpio and Bolero DI vehicles for 100 per cent usage trials. The vehicles will be tested under real-world conditions with severe and demanding terrains at high altitudes. Mahindra & Mahindra spearheaded two projects for it bio-diesel programme, one with IIT, Kanpur, and the other with Indian Oil Corporation's R&D Centre and Lubrizol.

At the Auto Expo 2006, M&M was one of the primary auto companies to have displayed a hybrid variant of the Mahindra Scorpio. Apart from the sports utility vehicle, a hydrogen-powered three-wheeler called the HY-Alfa and an electric powered zero emission three-wheeler titled Bijlee were on display too.
