The Confederation of Indian Industry launched the SME (small and medium enterprises) cluster in Vijayawada on Thursday.
Second in the series of clusters, the new cluster is expected to help companies improve their productivity and bring down costs. It comprises six units in different businesses such as manufacturers of castings, hosiery and garments, rubber products, printers and electronic equipment.
The three key deliverables of this project are energy management, cost management and quality management.
Mr Navin Mittal, Collector of Krishna district, who launched the cluster at a seminar on Innovation and Technology, hoped that more and more companies would join the cluster, a CII press release said.
He said the State Government was keen to promote the Krishna district as an industrial hub. Projects such as automotive cluster (Vijaya- wada), IT Park (Gannavaram), Apparel Park (Kanchincharla), paper and wood pulp industry (Jaggaiahpet) and a multi-product park (Machilipatnam) are in the process of taking shape.
Mr Ramesh Datla, Chairman of SME Sub-committee of CII (Southern Region) and Managing Director of Elico Ltd, said the chambers had initiated the cluster development programme in 2002 in order to enhance competitiveness of the SMEs.
Self-employment scheme
The CII, which entered into a pact with City & Guilds of the UK, will train the youth in necessary skills to make them eligible for jobs in manufacturing and services sectors. The district administration is also a partner in the Swayam Upadhi Bata scheme.
Under the Swayam Upadhi Bata scheme, over 2,500 candidates would be trained in vocations like electrical installation, motor vehicle engineering, carpentry etc.
