Mumbai Feb. 22 Manipal University aims at being listed among the top 100 universities of the world, hold 20 patents and have three Nobel Laureates on its faculty by 2016, according to Dr H.S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor of the varsity.

"The lack of research and development is what keeps Manipal out of the top 100," he said at a videoconference with journalists.

The university began focusing on R&D a few years ago and research grants have grown 400 per cent since 2004 - 05, Dr Ballal said. The university received Rs 4.25 crore in grants in the six months from April to September 2006. The Manipal University Committee is also committed to matching each grant with its own contribution.

Dr Ballal hoped the university's endowment would rise to Rs 300 crore from the present level of Rs 30 crore.

A third of that sum would be used for R&D, with the balance split between free treatment of poor patients and student scholarships.

"We do not want any bright student to be denied education for lack of money," Dr Ballal said.

Over the last year-and-a-half the university has been establishing private-public and industry-academic partnerships to help drive research. The participants include NXE-Philips semiconductors, GE, Philips Holland and the Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute, Pilani.
