The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved a proposal to set up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, in Shillong at a cost of Rs 120.67 crore to be provided over a period of five years.
Briefing newspersons, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mr P.R. Dasmunshi, said that the Meghalaya Government would provide at least 120 acres of land free of cost for the institute.
"Since this will be a national level institute, there will not be any reservation exclusively for students of the region in the post-graduate programme, for which admission will be through a Common Admission Test," he said.
The Cabinet also gave its nod for transferring assets, liabilities and manpower of National Instruments Ltd (NIL) to Jadavpur University in Kolkata. Mr Dasmunshi said the taking over of the infrastructure of NIL by Jadavpur University would promote industry-institute interaction, technology development, permit new academic programmes in emerging areas, and private-public partnership among others.
Pact with Turkey
In another decision, the Cabinet approved signing of an agreement between India and Turkey.
This will enable visa-free travel for diplomatic passport holders while entering, transiting through and exiting from the territory of the other country and also issue of residence visa valid for duration of the assignment to members of Diplomatic/Consular Missions, he said.
