An 18-member Scottish Colleges Mission, headed by Mr Roy Cross, Director of the British Council in Scotland, is currently in the city to explore education tie-ups.
The mission includes representatives from 13 top Scottish colleges and education bodies keen to identify partnership opportunities in areas such as curriculum development and capacity building.
The mission is designed to support the UK-India Education and Research Initiative launched by the UK Prime Minister in 2005.
Before coming to Kolkata, the mission visited Delhi.
Nearly 10 per cent of total of 30,000 foreign students in Scotland (from 180 countries) are from India; and the number is steadily increasing.
"The interaction with education agents and others in Delhi and Kolkata revealed that there was a need for stepping up the marketing of the various world-class courses the Scottish educational institutes offer," said a member of the delegation.
"The minimum course fee is £5,000 a year and the minimum duration of a course is two years with job guarantee for another two years."
