Handicraft exports from the country recorded a 14.57 per cent increase in dollar terms in April-January 2007 to $2.91 billion compared with $2.54 billion in the same period in the previous year.
In rupee terms, exports grew 18.13 per cent to Rs 13,269 crore (Rs 11,233 crore).
In fiscal 2005-06, exports grew 11.46 per cent to Rs 14,527 crore (Rs 13,033 crore). In dollar terms, they grew 10.06 per cent to $3.28 billion ($2.98).
"We expect to close the current fiscal with exports of about Rs 16,000 crore," the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) Executive Director, Mr Rakesh Kumar, told Business Line here.
More than 80 per cent of handicraft exports originate from northern and central India. EPCH now plans to increase its focus on southern and eastern India over the next three years.
The EPCH Executive Director highlighted that exports from northern and central India have almost reached a saturation point.
"We have recently opened offices in Chennai and Bangalore. Our effort now would be to tap South India, whose contribution to the country's handicraft exports is still low at about 8 per cent.
Our increased focus on southern India is going to help us in achieving the Rs 25,000-crore annual handicraft export target by 2010-11," Mr Kumar said.
