Excise and Customs States - Karnataka Petroleum products account for major part of Mangalore excise collection Our Bureau
In the first 10 months of the current fiscal, the Mangalore Central Excise Commissionerate collected excise duty of Rs 3,220.89 crore as against Rs 3,008.48 crore during the corresponding period of the previous year. Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Dr John Joseph, Commissioner of Central Excise and Customs, Mangalore, said that the major revenue-yielding commodities are petroleum products, paper, and iron and steel products. Of them, more than 91 per cent of the revenue is collected from petroleum products, the main taxpayer being Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL). The Mangalore Commissionerate collected a excise duty of Rs 3,459.72 crore during 2005-06 and Rs 2,453.97 crore during 2004-05. The Commissionerate covers the revenue districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada. He said the Mangalore Commissionerate contributes three per cent to the total collection in the country.
SERVICE TAX
During the first 10 months of the current fiscal, the Commissionerate collected service tax of Rs 123.93 crore (Rs 94.55 crore). This figure is above the service tax collected during the entire 2005-06. The Commissionerate collected service tax of Rs 122.48 crore during 2005-06 and Rs 91.38 crore during 2004-05. He said that the commissioning of deep-draught multipurpose berth at New Mangalore Port has contributed for the growth in service tax.
EVASION
He cautioned the taxpayers not to evade tax and urged them to be prompt in their payment. In the first 10 months of the fiscal, the Commissionerate was successful in collecting Rs 18 crore of service tax and Rs 85 lakh of excise duty that were evaded. Stating that industries and service sectors are likely to see a large-scale growth in the coming years, he said the Mangalore Commissionerate has been gearing up for this by adopting user-friendly approaches in administering of tax collection. Dr Joseph said the Commissionerate would celebrate the Central Excise day on February 24.
