Railways Railways freight earnings up 16.6% in April-Jan Our Bureau
In terms of tonnage, the Railways carried 593.67 million tonnes (mt) (542.81 mt), up by 9.37 per cent. The net tonne kilo metres (NTKM) went up by 8.47 per cent to 3,89,170 million (3,58,770 million), stated an official release. The NTKM represents the combined increase in distance and tonnage.
JANUARY PERFORMANCE
The earnings from freight traffic in January were Rs 3,842.14 crore (Rs 3,364.38 crore), showing an increase of 14.2 per cent. The Railways carried 65.74 mt (61.72 mt ) of freight traffic during the month, registering an increase of 6.51 per cent. The NTKM went up from 41,510 million in January 2006 to 42,929 million in January 2007, up by 3.42 per cent. Of the total earnings last month, Rs 1,493.94 crore came from transportation of 29.19 mt of coal; followed by Rs 338.67 crore from 3.84 mt of foodgrains; Rs 310.35 crore from 6.23 mt of cement; Rs 261.65 crore from 3.12 mt of petroleum oil and lubricant; Rs 233.09 crore from 3.37 mt of iron ore for exports; Rs 202.7 crore from 3.22 mt of fertilisers; Rs 198.8 crore from 1.79 mt of iron and steel for steel plants; Rs 177.62 crore from 4.83 mt of raw material for steel plants; and Rs 625.32 crore from 10.15 mt of other goods.
