Tea States - Maharashtra Maharashtra sugar co-ops plan refining facility Our Bureau
This refining unit will primarily cater to the export demand for refined sugar, said Mr Prakash Naiknavare, Managing Director of Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Federation Ltd, speaking to the media on Friday. Mr Naiknavare said that if India has to compete globally in the sugar sector then a large refining facility is required. Rather than raw sugar being refined individually by the cooperative sugar mills, they could pool their raw sugar and refine it at one place. They will get the advantage of `economies of scale' as well as better prices, he said. The sugar refinery project with easy access to Mumbai's ports is still at a very preliminary stage, said Mr Naiknavare. The location and refining capacity for the project has not been decided, he said. There is a global demand for refined sugar with ICUMSA of 45 and a coastal facility, such as the one being planned, can meet that demand, he said. ICUMSA stands for International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis. It is an international unit for expressing the purity of sugar and is directly related to the colour of the sugar.
