Coimbatore Feb. 23 The Chairman of Wipro Technologies, Mr Azim Premji, today took time off to listen to the business model pursued by the city-based poultry major Suguna Poultry Farm Ltd and to understand the role of information technology in the company's livestock business management handled through its contract farming mechanism.

Suguna Poultry's IT department team made a 45-minute presentation focussing on Suguna's multi-locational poultry operations in general and the role of information technology application, in particular, to a five-member Wipro team at which Mr Premji and Suguna Poultry's Managing Director, Mr B. Soundarajan were present.

The Wipro team, according to Suguna Poultry sources, is keen to know the areas in which the poultry company has unrolled the IT and the management information system (MIS) applications as Suguna's information networking covers about 155 locations spread across the nine States (excluding its Punjab operations), which includes 120 chicken production centres, 26 feed mills, seven hatcheries and finally the 12,000 farmers under its contract farming.

The online information system followed by the poultry company thus covers such critical areas for a rural agri-business company like inventories lying in different centres, employees stationed in different fields (Suguna has on rolls 3,000 employees including veterinarians, many qualified management trained executives, field staff and farm level workers) with different knowledge levels.

The MIS of the company has been developed specifically to take into account these aspects.

Later talking to presspersons, Mr Soundarajan said Mr Premji and his team expressed their desire to partner Suguna for furthering the IT applications as they have the technology providers to map the requirement of livestock/poultry companies and the IT major too has exposure in rural communication and education. Suguna Poultry adopted the Oracle's ERP platform middle of last year.
