Coimbatore Feb 25 The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, today stressed the need for linking of rivers in the interest of the nation.

After laying the foundation stone for a Rs 300-cr IT park and distributing welfare assistance to select beneficiaries, Mr Karunanidhi appealed to the people to give up violence and sort out differences in an amicable manner.

His call for resolving differences through mutual agreements and talks comes in the wake of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award.

Stressing the need for healthy relationship with neighbouring States, Mr Karunanidhi said that the protests against the court order and tribunal awards created disharmony between the people of Tamil Nadu and those in Karnataka and Kerala.

"Such differences will turn Tamil Nadu into an island. This should end. It should not be allowed to divide the people."

Expressing the need for Central intervention in the issue, he said that his party would organise a national-level convention on linking of rivers.

On the IT park, he said that a park similar to the Coimbatore model was being contemplated in different <149>districts.

He added that the Coimbatore IT Park project could not be compared with the Tidel Park in Chennai, as it was an Elcot-Tidco joint initiative.

The project is expected to come up on 10 acres on the 29-acre site identified within the Government Medical College campus. It would have a built-up area of 10 lakh sq ft.
