Tiruchi Feb. 25 For nearly 15,000 graduates and post-graduates in and around Tiruchi, all roads led to the Bishop Heber College, the venue of The Hindu Opportunities Fair on Saturday and Sunday. As many as 10,000 students, mostly comprising freshers, visited the Fair on Saturday. On Sunday, a majority were candidates with experience.

Fourteen companies had about 5,000 jobs on offer. A little over 300 candidates could succeed in getting spot job offers in IT/ITES areas that requires communication skills of a high order.

Top Recruiter

Cognizant Technology Solutions, the presenting sponsor, emerged as the top recruiter with 60 offers in IT services and 12 in ITES. "We have screened over 1,500 CVs for future requirements in IT/ITES Services," said Mr Shankar Balaji, Manager, Talent Acquisition of Cognizant Technology Solutions. A few companies like Saksoft could recruit fewer numbers than they had expected due to lesser turnout of experienced candidates. Candidates with less than two years experience were considered freshers and those with 2 to 10 years experience as professionals.

According to industry representatives, who judged the performance of the candidates as satisfactory for a place like Tiruchi, the undercurrent of success was more in thousands of other candidates getting an insight into the areas where they need to improve upon to fit into industry requirements. A first-hand account of the realities of job industry is all that is required for the section of students, who dropped in out of curiosity, to devote attention on developing soft-skills, according to an Human Resource Executive of an IT company.

Mismatch

Mr V. Seshagiri, Trainee, HCL BPO, observes that there can be no quick-fix solution to the mismatch between industry needs and the outputs from academic institutions. The remedy can begin with lively classroom situation. The onus, according to him, is on the teachers to make their approach innovative and interactive such that students shed their inhibitions to speak and communicate well in English.

Nevertheless, the consensus among the recruiters was that the fair was a success from the perspective of the student community, which, they felt, was in the stage of evolving.

Verizon Data Services India Pvt Ltd was the associate sponsor of the event.

The technology sponsor was TMI. The other participating companies comprised Allsec Technologies Ltd; Intelenet Global Services Pvt Ltd; Saksoft Ltd; SlashSupport India Pvt Ltd; Infosys Technologies Ltd; HCL Technologies Ltd - BPO Services; Cognizant; Verizon Data Services India Pvt Ltd; Wipro BPO — a division of Wipro Ltd; HSBC; TnQ Books & Journals; Agency Assist INC.
