New Projects FMC opens organolithium plant near Hyderabad Our Bureau
These are key ingredients in many bulk drugs, in particular drugs for cardio-vascular diseases and HIV infections, an official release from the Bangalore-based FMC India P Ltd said. The company plans to export organolithiums and related organometallic products to the Western markets and Asia. Until now, its Lithium Division supplied the products through imports from the US parent. Its customers include generic pharmaceutical majors, custom research and custom manufacturing companies. "Over the next few years our presence will grow as we plan to invest further in research and development activities to develop new products for the domestic and export markets," the release cited Mr Soumitra Purkayastha, Country Manager for the Lithium Division. It also plans to have a presence in the nascent energy storage device manufacturing sector. Currently this sector is focussed on the defence industry. With mobile phone manufacturers setting up facilities in the country, lithium battery manufacture for commercial applications will also take off, the company said. FMC Corp has invested $15 million (around Rs 7.5 crore) in the domestic life science industry through three units. The Bangalore-based subsidiary set up in 2000 operates the Lithium and the Agricultural Products Divisions. It has set up an R&D centre at the Indian Institute of Science. A BioPolymer Division operates from Mumbai.
