In an attempt to make seat allocation transparent and efficient, the Railways has proposed to provide the travelling ticket examiners (TTE) hand-held computer terminals on four pairs of trains next year as a pilot project. Hence, instead of manually feeding the data TTEs would be equipped with handheld personal digital assistants (PDAs) connected to the passenger reservation system (PRS) database through a wireless service provider's broadband network
TTE will feed in the current vacancy position coach wise and berth wise into these handheld devices. Hence, the status of passengers with reservations who have not boarded the train as well as passengers waitlist would be updated on the PRS on a real-time basis. With the exact status of unclaimed seats updated, waitlisted passengers in subsequent stations would be allocated seats well in advance.
While the project had been on trial in Delhi-Lucknow and Delhi-Amritsar Shatabdi trains, it is now extended to New Delhi-Dehradun, New Delhi-Ajmer and Golden Temple Express.
The PDAs cost about Rs 30,000, but the Railways expects that if procured in bulk, these prices could be driven down. The Railways has some 2,000 reserved trains, and about 8,000-10,000 unreserved trains. Each train is allocated about four-five ticket examiners generally.
